DARRELL M. DAY Darrell M. Day, 85, of Danville, passed away at 12:44 a.m. Friday, January 22, 2010 at his home. Darrell was born on December 3, 1924 in Danville, the son of Harley C. and Ora K. (Spencer) Day. He married Beulah M. Boots Garland on July 2, 1948 in Danville. She preceded him in death on April 5, 2009. He is survived by one son-William Bill (Patty) Day of Danville; two daughters- Nancy (Randall) Hatton of Danville and Tami (Dan) Hayes of Pawnee, Illinois; six grandchildren- Jason (Amanda) Hatton of Urbana, Troy Hatton of New Mexico, Holly (Matt) Vice of Danville, Katie Hatton of Urbana, Mariah Hayes and Shaquil Hayes both of Pawnee; four great-grandchildren- Caden Hatton, Aiden Vice, Isabel Vice and Savannah Vice; one brother- Tom L. (Mary) Day of Danville; one sister-Charlotte McCollum of Downey, California; one sister-in-law- Beverly Day of Danville; several nieces and nephews; and his lifelong friend- Fred Nelson of Hoopeston. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers- Gus and Paulie Day; two sisters- Marie Osborn and Katherine Zimmerman; and two brothers-in-law- Paul McCollum and Clyde Osborn Sr. Darrell attended Danville High School. During his senior year he joined the United States Navy and served from 1943 to 1947. He worked at C and EI railroad and later worked at Esco for several years until he retired. Darrell worked part-time at Alexanders Sporting Goods after he retired. He previously attended Vermilion Heights Church of Christ and Ridgeview Baptist Church. Darrell was involved in the choir, Christian Mens Fellowship and an Elder at Vermilion Heights Church of Christ. He was most recently attending CrossRoads Christian Church. Darrell was a past member of the masons and Gao Grotto. He enjoyed woodworking and was known for his birdhouses and handmade rocking chairs. Darrell had a love for sports. In his younger years, he enjoyed playing softball and later coaching little league baseball and football. He also loved spending time with his family, and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren kept him active. A Celebration of the Life of Darrell M. Day will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, January 25, 2010 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center. Visitation will be from 2:00-6:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Following the service Darrell will be laid to rest in Sunset Memorial Park. Military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post #210.
