Newport, Ind. - Clyde E. Cutrell, 90, of Newport, passed away at 6:55 a.m. CST, Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at the VA Illiana Medical Center in Danville, Illinois. He was born December 9, 1920 in Danville, Illinois, the son of the late Clyde and Elizabeth Haylett Cutrell. He married Theda Ann Moore on August 5, 1945 in Danville, Illinois. She preceded him in death on December 27, 1984. Survivors include his daughter, Phyllis(Darrell)Orman and his son, Greg(Karen)Cutrell both of Newport, Indiana; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sons, Mike and Dale Cutrell; a great grandson; brother, Louis Mantel Cutrell and sister, Kitty Jane Ross. Clyde retired from Uniroyal Newport Army Annunition Plant on July 5, 1985. He had worked at the plant since 1961 in the Fire/Guard Department. Clyde was a veteran of World War II serving with the United States Army. Clyde was sent to France on July 15, 1944, as a rifleman in the 79th Infantry Division, F Company. His first walk on the soil of France was on Utah Beach. With the 79th Division, he fought across France and Belgium. Clyde was wounded twice while overseas and received two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. His other medals were the Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Europe African Middle Eastern Campaign with 3 Battle Stars, American Campaign and the World War II Victory Medal. On November 29, 2007, Clyde was awarded the Knights of the French Legion of Honor. Clyde was a life member of the Newport American Legion Post #184, Leon Von Schepper #9 Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #15015 and the Combat Infantryman Association. he was also a member of the Indiana Volunteer Fireman Association, National Rifle Association, Vermilion County War Museum Society (Danville, Illinois) and the 79th Infantry Division 314 Infantry Association W.W. II. He was past Commander of the Newport American Legion and former Fire Chief for the Newport Volunteer Fire Department. Clyde enjoyed watching St. Louis Cardionals baseball, hunting, fishing, bowling, musseling and traveling to Branson, Missouri. Funeral services: 11 a.m. EST Saturday, November 26, 2011 at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuyga, Indiana; Officiating: Pastor John Hawkins; Burial with Military Honors at Thomas Cemetery in Newport, Indiana; Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. EST Friday, November 25, 2011 at the funeral home with Indiana Volunteer Firemans Association memorial service at 7:30 p.m. EST.
