GEORGETOWN - Clovis T. Toby' Scott, 89, former teacher, coach, and school administrator with Georgetown School District, was called home to be with the Lord at 3:55am, Wednesday, February 9th, 2005. Toby' was born on March 29th, 1915, the second of seven children of Walter and Ruth (Gaston) Scott in Charleston, IL. Toby' attended the Charleston Community Schools, graduating from Charleston High School in 1934. He was a Veteran of the US Navy serving in World War II. He then continued his education at Eastern Illinois University, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1940. He started his coaching career at Eastern Illinois in 1940. From there, he moved on to Chester, IL, to serve as a teacher, coach & athletic director. On September 15th, 1942, he was united in marriage to Flora M. Gates of East St. Louis, IL. Mr. Scott spent 40 years of service to Illinois Public Schools and communities; teaching and coaching in Chester (1941-43), Ridge Farm (1943-44), Oblong (1944-45), Milford (1945-47), St. Anne (1947-54), and Georgetown (1954-80). In 1970, thirty years after his start in teaching, he received his Master of Science Degree in Education Administration from Easter Illinois University. He served as head basketball coach and athletic director at Georgetown High School from 1954-64. Toby' continued teaching at Georgetown and returned to the "hardwood" coaching the Buffaloes from 1973-75. He retired from the Georgetown Public Schools in 1980. Toby' was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honorary Education Fraternity, a 60-year member of the Fraternal Order of Masons (Blue Lodge), a member of the American Legion, and the Georgetown United Methodist Church. Those whom Clovis leaves behind include: his wife, Flora; his sons, Walter (Carolyn) Scott of Decatur, IL, and Toby (Sharon) Scott of Lebanon, Tennessee; his siblings, Wanda Milchak of Hobart, IN, Barbara Wedeskey of Detroit, MI, and Walter R. Scott of Byron, IL. Toby' was blessed with six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. His parents, two brothers, one sister, and his daughter, Kimberly Ann Barnes, preceded him in death. Toby' will be dearly missed by family, friends, students and players, as he touch the minds and hearts of so many during his 40 years of teaching.
