Clifford A. Hegg, Sr.

Clifford A. Hegg, Sr., 84, formerly of Danville, passed away on September 2, 2026, at his home in Veedersburg surrounded by his loving family. He was born on May 20, 1942, in Danville to the late Ruth {Wilson} and William A. Hegg, Sr.

Known affectionately by his family as “Butch”, Cliff graduated from Danville High School and attended Danville Junior College before continuing his education at Eastern Illinois University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree. His commitment to learning and professional excellence was further reflected in being among a select handful of officers from the Danville Police Department chosen for additional schooling at the FBI Academy.

He had a strong work ethic which he instilled in his children. As a young father, he worked part-time at both Alexander's Sporting Goods and Burger Chef while working full-time as a police officer. Cliff devoted 36 years to the City of Danville Police Department, where he wore many hats but served mainly as a Lieutenant. At the beginning of his career, he also served six years with the National Guard. His long career in law enforcement spoke to his sense of duty and his commitment to protecting and serving others. While with the department, he attended many schools and trainings to enhance his skills. Even after retirement, his connection to the department remained strong, and he continued to work as a civilian on the force for another decade.

Beyond his work, Clifford found joy in the simple and lasting pleasures of life. He was an avid reader and enjoyed listening to sports games on the radio, especially when the Cubs, Colts, or Fighting Illini were playing. He loved spending time with his family and especially looked forward to attending his grandchildren's sporting events and introducing them to his favorite action movies. He also enjoyed playing Othello, backgammon, and Sorry with his children and grandchildren. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his greatest happiness.

Cliff is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Linda {Osborn} Hegg; his children Clifford (Amy) Hegg, Jr. and Jennie (Jeff) Jordan; as well as his grandchildren Torrie (Lane Wells) Hegg, Dalton Hegg, Cody (Shelley) Starkey, Tyler (Alexa) Starkey, Logan (Lauren) Starkey, Noah Starkey, Avery Jordan (Merigold Carnahan), and Anna (Clint) Hicks. He will also be missed by his absolute favorite companion, his dog Sally; his brother Bill (Debbie) Hegg; and his great-grandchildren Cooper Starkey, Charlotte Starkey, Jack Starkey, James Jordan, Aida Hicks, and Damon Hicks. His dear friend Jeff Nicoson, brothers-in-law Clyde Osborn and Carl Osborn and sister-in-law JoAnn Brooks survive him as well.

In addition to his parents, Cliff was preceded in death by his great-granddaughter Vivienne Starkey; brothers-in-law Terry Osborn and Jack Osborn; and his sister-in-law Betty Walsh.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, located at 3940 N Vermilion St, Danville, Illinois 61834. A funeral service celebrating his life will be held on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at 1:00 p.m., also at the funeral home. Pastor Kevin Purdy will officiate. The family encourages everyone to dress casually and wear Illini, Colts, or Cubs attire to the visitation and funeral. He will be laid to rest in Sunset Memorial Park’s Everyday Hero section in Danville following services that day.
