Clifford D. Sowers

Newport, Ind. - Clifford D. Sowers, 67, of Newport, passed away at 4:48 a.m. EST Tuesday, December 25, 2012 at Union Hospital Clinton in Clinton, Indiana. He was born August 31, 1945 in Clinton, Indiana, the son of Roscoe and Martha Jane Pearman Sowers. He married Helen L. Bailey on February 18, 1967 in Newport, Indiana. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Kim(Tony)Bennett of Eugene, Indiana and Kandice(Brock)Fortner of Clinton, Indiana; one son, Keith Sowers of Newport, Indiana; his mother, Martha Jane Sowers of Newport, Indiana; six grandchildren and one great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his father, Roscoe Sowers; granddaughter, Victoria "Tori" See Hathaway; sister, Elsie Ann Allen and brother, Dennis Sowers. Clifford was a retired teacher at North Vermillion High School. He was a 20 year veteran of the United States Army and a Vietnam War veteran. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam, receiving a purple heart. Clifford was a 1963 graduate of Newport High School and a 1985 graduate of Danville Area Community College. Clifford was a very avid model train collector (HO Scale). He also enjoyed all sports, becoming a Denver Broncos fan when Peyton Manning became quarterback. Graveside services and burial: 11 a.m. EST Monday, December 31, 2012 at Thomas Cemetery in Newport, Indiana with military rites by the Cayuga American Legion Post #263; Officiating: Pastor Dana Spurgeon. There will be no visitation. DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana is in charge of arrangements.
