Clara Elizabeth Thornton, 97, of Danville passed away at 11:02 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, 2016 at Presence United Samaritans Medical Center, Danville, IL. Clara was born on February 12, 1919, the daughter of Frank and Bertha (Reck) Neupert in Danville, IL. She attended Danville Public Schools and the University of Illinois. She married Roy Allan Thornton on September 6, 1942 at St. James United Methodist Church. He preceded her in death on January 1, 2005. Survivors include two daughters: Susan (Dr. Ron) Serfoss of Danville and Anne (Gary) Holley of Oscoda, MI; four granddaughters: Amy (Rick) Ashton of Prospect, KY, Suzanna (Chris) Kosobud of Dunwoody, GA, Jessica Holley and Megan (Lance) Thompson both of Oscoda, MI, and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Allan, two brothers, Edwin and George, and two nephews. Clara was one of the oldest members of St. James United Methodist Church. She attended as a child, she and Allan were married in the chapel and they renewed their vows there on their 50th anniversary. She was active in the United Methodist Women and was a 55 year member of P.E.O., most recently in Chapter LT. She loved symphonic music and enjoyed singing in many church choirs. Clara was an avid sports fan, especially the Illini, loved playing golf, playing cards and games and reading. She was an excellent seamstress, especially making clothing and American Girl doll clothes for her great granddaughters. Clara will long be remembered for her love of life, her sense of humor and her unconditional love. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 3 p.m. at St. James United Methodist Church with Reverend Randall Robinson officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00- 3:00 p.m. at St. James prior to the Celebration. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Fan the Flame Fund at St. James United Methodist Church or the Danville Symphony Orchestra.
