Cedar Rapids, IA - Charlotte J. Spang went to meet the LORD on Sunday, February 7, 2016 at 7:06 pm. Charlotte was born at home in rural Vermillion County, IL, May 15, 1931, to Frank and Mary Canaday. Frank and Mary's antique business in Charlotte's childhood home instilled a love and appreciation of antiques that lasted a lifetime. At Georgetown High School, Charlotte not only graduated with honors, but also with the heart of George Spang, who she married on October 15, 1950, at the First Methodist Church, Georgetown, IL. In addition to her husband, the loves of her life were her children: Diana Lynn (Max) Varner, Verona, WI, Cynthia (Bill) Burkhalter, Cedar Rapids, IA, Nancy (Steve) Trask, Champlin, MN. and Charles (Patti) Spang, Madeira Beach, FL; her grandchildren: Katie (Ben) Fowle, Lindsay (Matt) Duch, Courtney Varner, Matt Burkhalter, Stephanie (Jon) Boatwright, Laura and David Trask, Charles Joshua (Kristin) Spang and Christopher (Ashley) Spang; her great grandchildren: Raya and Manya Fowle, Maxwell Duch and Olivia Grace Spang, and her sister-in-law Ann (Don) Smith and nephews. As a result of George's military, college, and professional life, Charlotte created a home for her family over a span of 32 moves in 16 cities and towns and 12 states. At each move, Charlotte prioritized her children and the family's happiness as seemingly overnight the house would be a home, center to family dinners as Charlotte loved to cook. George says, "At each location, we gained many friends. With Charlotte`s personality, she became our Social Network Administrator in our church, school and outside contacts; she loved antiques, gardening and canning, and bridge." After graduating from high school, Charlotte attended Utterback and Brown Business College, Danville, IL. She used the skills gained there for secretarial positions and later as an insurance agent. Additionally, Charlotte's love of antiques translated into Charlotte`s Antiques at daughter Cindy's business, Smokehouse Antiques in Amana, Ia. Sunset's Houghton-Leasure Chapel, Georgetown, IL is entrusted with Charlotte's funeral services with Pastor James Blue officiating which will be held at Olivet Church of the Nazarene, 5054 Olivet Rd., Georgetown, IL 11:00 AM Thursday, February 11, 2016. Visitation will also be at the Nazarene Church on Wednesday, February 10, 5:00 -7:00 pm. Tentative memorial service is planned at Pleasant Valley Church Winona for May 14. She was deeply loved and will be dearly missed.
