Charles West

Charles Wm. West, 76, of Cayuga, IN. passed away at 12:05 pm Thursday July 22, 2004 at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, IN. He was born on April 26, 1928 in Indianapolis, IN the son of the late Charles H. and Louise E. (Raasch) West. Charles married Megan Bailey on February 12, 1949 in Danville, IL. She survives of Cayuga, IN. Other survivors include; 2 daughters, Dianne (Carl) Hamand of Eugene, IN and Judith (Rodney) McClanahan of Pekin, IL. 1 brother Donald L. (Roxie) West of Wanamaker, IN. 5 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren, and Edward Richardson of Eugene, IN. 2 sisters and 1 grandson preceded him in death. Charles was a graduate of Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis. After high school he enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served his country proudly during the occupation of Japan achieving the rank of Sergeant. Charles worked as a farmer and as millwright for 40 years, and served as Supervisor for 10 years of Vermillion County Indiana Soil and Water Conservation. Charles attended Waterman Baptist Church in Lodi, IN. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge # 60 in Covington, the Scottish Rite, GAO Grotto, and the Western Indiana Shrine Club. Charles also was a life member of both the American Legion Rainbow Post #263 in Cayuga and the VFW Post #2395 in Covington, IN. His many interest included farming, active in the restoration of the P-38 fighter plane "Glacier Girl", and also wrote a book regarding P- 38's that were in existence in the mid to late 90's. He was very active in the Veedersburg War Museum. After retirement Charles and Megan enjoyed traveling throughout the entire United States and abroad.
