Charles Wesley Schlatter, 91, of the Urbana-Champaign area, passed away at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 13, 2005 at Department of Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Care System in Danville. He was born December 21, 1913 in Brookings, SD, the son of Charles F. and Lora E. (Nusbaum) Schlatter. He married Marjorie J. Wheeler on July 27, 1941 in St. Louis, Missouri, she survives. Other survivors include: one son- Charles M. (Cindy) Schlatter of Champaign; two daughters-Dorothy L. Schlatter of Urbana and Malinda L. (Tony) Rydenbark of Normal, IL; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one brother- William J. Schlatter of Stanford, CT. His parents and one grandson- Jason Charles Thomas preceded him in death. Charles attended University High School in Urbana and also attended South Dakota State at Brookings for two years. He worked for the University of Illinois in the Chemistry Department as a storekeeper for 18 years and also for the Krannert Art Museum and School of Art & Design as a security guard for 10 years. He was a member of St. John The Divine Episcopal Church in Champaign for over 30 years. Charles proudly served his country during WW II in the US Army from 1940-1945 in the South Pacific. He loved western books, especially Louis LaMour, and he was a member of the Bowling League at Western Bowl in Champaign.
