Charles Sykes

Charles Sykes, 96, of Georgetown, passed away on June 28, 2015 at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Danville. He was born on December 30, 1918 in Georgetown, IL, the son of Fred and Beulah {Sullivan} Sykes. He married Lois Sollars on February 20, 1944, in Georgetown, IL. She preceded him in death in 2010. Charles will be deeply missed by: one son, John and (Sandra) Sykes of Danville: grandchildren, Lori (Bob Pell) Sollars of Catlin and Scott Aaron (Jessica) Sykes of Fairmount; great grandchildren; Alyssa Grace Sollars, Tyler Sollars, Jacob Sykes, Kaylee Mae Sykes and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings & their spouses, Elaine (Charles) Reffett & Orville (Madeline) Sykes; his sister-in-law & her spouse, Mary Lou (Wally) Carpenter; and his daughter-in-law, Linda Sykes. Charles was a 1936 graduate of Georgetown High School. He served in the United States Navy for 20 years before retiring in 1959. After the Navy he worked for Hyster in Danville for 20 years timing and tuning lift trucks before retiring in 1984. Charles spent his retirement living in Barefoot Bay, Florida, until 2008. He loved to fish, camp, & vacation in Minnesota and Florida. He was a youth boxer in Golden Gloves and in the Navy. He was a long time member of First Church of Christ in Georgetown. A graveside service for Charles will be held on July 6, 2015 at 11:00 AM at Danville National Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 3, 2015 at Sunset's Houghton-Leasure Funeral Home in Georgetown from 4:00-7:00 PM. Memorials can be made in Charles' name to the American Cancer Society.
