Charles Edmond Shelton, known to many as “Chris”/“Crazy Chris” son of Charles Edward Shelton and Marilyn Dianna Thomas, passed away on March 30, 2026, in Champaign, IL, at the age of 68.
Christ was born in Urbana, IL, on February 18, 1958, and in 1959, he moved with his family to Racine, WI, where he spent most of his life until three years ago, when he returned to the Champaign area. He was known for having a great sense of humor, always bringing smiles to those around him.
As a young man, Chris was a track athlete, a passion that opened the door to a love of all sports, including basketball and football, to name a few. Beyond his athletic interest, Chris had a green thumb and was known to make any seed grow. He trained pitbulls for many years, showing the dedication and kindness that defined much of his life. He also watched out for the elderly and kids in his neighborhood.
Chris is survived by his mother, Marilyn Grandberry; brothers, Alandus Grandberry and Lamont Thomas; special friend, Karen Kelly; two uncles, Ronald Lawrence and Ernest McGowan; his favorite aunt, Gala, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his son, Dartavis Shelton, stepfather Herbert Grandberry, maternal grandfather and grandmother, Albert and Mary Thomas, three Aunts and two uncles.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center’s Champaign Chapel, 710 N. Neil St., Champaign, IL 61820, on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at 12:00 P.M. A memorial visitation will be held prior at 11:00 A.M. Following the service, Chris will be laid to rest at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Champaign, IL
