Charles Robert Hawkins

Charles Robert Hawkins, 89, of Bismarck, passed away at his home with his loving wife by his side on Thursday, January 14, 2016. Charles was born on July 8, 1926, in Vermilion County, the son of Melvin R. and Bertha Ellen (Snyder) Hawkins. On August 24, 1947, he married the love of his life, JoAnne Thayer and for the last 68 years, they have enjoyed each other's company. Surviving Charles is his wife JoAnne, their three children, Francee (Gary) Davis of Georgetown, Elaine Lueth (Jeff Sturm) of Loda, Chuck (Debbie) Hawkins of Conyers, GA; grandchildren, Douglas Davis and Ryan (Sonia) Davis of Birmingham, AL, and Tara Weathers of Conyers, GA; four great grandchildren Olivia and Emma Davis of Birmingham, AL, Trenton Smith and Trina Weathers of Conyers, GA; six living siblings, Dorothy Goble, Catherine Goble, Jim (Gloria) Hawkins, Vera (Junior) Keller, Marie (John) Huffman and Carl (Janice) Hawkins. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, six siblings; Ilene Durbin, Ruth Gutterridge, Tom, Clyde, Don and Erma Hawkins. Charles loved to work and at the age of six he was out in the field baling hay. Farming was his life. He enjoyed working the ground, planting the seeds, raising livestock and even doing the book work that comes along with all the physical work. Charles enjoyed horses and being around animals. Charles was a member of the Bismarck United Methodist Church. The family would like to thank his angel Sherry Haun as well as Carle Hospice Nurses. A celebration of Charles's life will be held at 10am on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville with Pastor Carl Mesiti officiating. A visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 from 4-7 pm. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park after the service. Memorials may be made in Charles's name to Bismarck United Methodist Church or to Carle Hospice.
