Charles M. "Woody" Woodward, 86 of Danville, IL passed away peacefully in the comfort of his own home surrounded by his surviving children and loving wife and caregiver, Shirley on Sunday, November 28, 2021.
Woody was born on March 1, 1935 to Ralph E. and Ina M. (Newnum) Woodward in Danville and remained a lifelong resident of Danville. He graduated from Danville High School in 1953 and attended Danville Junior College. Woody started working for Steak n Shake at the age of 13 to help his widowed mother make ends meet and retired as a manager after 23 years. He owned and managed several rental properties and became a real estate agent. He sold real estate for Cunningham Realty before turning his large home into a foster care home for disabled Veterans. He and his wife Shirley provided a safe and caring home for many veterans for over 12 years. They treated them like family and Woody continued to visit them at the Veterans Hospital until he was no longer able to.
Woody was an adept puzzler, cunning card player and in his youth a champion marble player. He always had a crossword and jigsaw puzzle in the works, and we all enjoyed helping him with them. Until illnesses interfered with their routine, he and Shirley played a nightly duel of the word game Boggle. Although Shirley almost always won with that game, he was a good sport (most of the time) and continued to compete. He and his brainpower will certainly be missed when the family games are brought out.
Woody is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley (Madden) Woodward as well as three children, Sherri (Tracy) Stebbins of Danville, Rob Woodward of Chrisman, IL and Becky (Darryl) Dickelman of Danville; one sister, Mary Lou (Ralph) Cravens of Danville; ten grandchildren, Michelle Johnson of Clarksville, TN, Ryan (Jennifer) Johnson of Waunakee, WI, Cassie (Dan) Pasciuti of Decatur, GA, Nate (Amanda) Woodward of Amherst, OH, Sue (Jereme) Blackburn of Burke, VA, Angela (Adam) Snyder of Oakwood, OH, Michael (Joni) Woodward of Greenwood, IN, John (Shannon) Dickelman of Glenburn, ND, Marc Dickelman of Round Rock, TX, and Lance Dickelman of Danville; eighteen great-grandchildren, Devyn Johnson, Tayler Brazzle, Chandler Stebbins, Gracie Johnson, Cayden Johnson, Conner Johnson, Colin Johnson, Ana Johnson, Lucas Pasciuti, Kyle Pasciuti, Haley Blackburn, Veronica Snyder, Sophia Woodward, Vivi Blackburn, Luke Woodward, Claire Woodward, Erin Woodward, Hailee Dickelman; two Great Great Grandchildren, Keatyn and Audrielle Brazzle.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Ralph B. Woodward and 2 granddaughters Brandy Johnson and Jessica Stebbins.
