Charles M. 'Mick' Grites

Charles Michael "Mick" Grites, 76, of Danville, died peacefully at home with his family by his side on Monday, August 27, 2012. Mike was born on August 9, 1936 in Georgetown, IL, the son of Charles and Mary (Anuzis) Griec. They preceded him in death. He was married on June 4, 1960 in Tolono, IL to Elizabeth Lee "Betty" (Kleiss) Grites. They were married for 52 years. She survives. Mike is also survived by two sons- John (Tina) Grites and Mark (Darcy) Grites, both of Danville, three daughters-Cathy (Tom) Bialeschki of St. Joseph, IL, Lisa (Pat) McAleenan of Chesterfield, MO, and Laurie (Dean) Lingley of Hoopeston, IL. Survivors also include eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by his siblings, Phil (Karen) Grites of Palo Alto, CA, Connie (Don) Russell of Columbia, MO and Joe (Carole) Griec of Troy, OH. Mike attended school in Westville, IL, graduating high school in 1954. He attended Eastern Illinois University. He then joined the U.S. Air Force and served his country from 1954 to 1958. Mick retired from Hyster in 1998 after 39 years of service. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church. His hobbies included cooking, hunting, fishing, anything Illini and Da Bears. He was especially proud of his Lithuanian heritage and his favorite Weimaraner, Buddy. By far, the greatest joy in his life was his family. He referred to his children as his "greatest achievement". A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, August 31, 2012 at 10:00 AM at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Danville with Fr. Greg Nelson officiating. Visitation is from 4:00-8:00 PM Thursday, August 30, 2012 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, A Life Celebration Home in Danville. Burial will be at St. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Westville.
