Charles L. Smith

Charles Smith, 80, of Danville, IL passed away late Wednesday night at North Logan Health Care.

He was born June 22, 1939 in Danville, IL to Leon and Ada Smith of Danville.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Smith.

He is survived by his son Charles L Smith Jr. of Maryland, daughter Sherry A. Smith of Florida and grandson Alexander Smith-Burden. Charles Smith is also survived by step-daughters Terry Calhoun of Oakwood, IL, Becky (Pat) Doan, Cindy (Bill) Cambron, Cheryl (Troy) Sullivan of Danville, IL, Debbie (Cal) Jensen of Monmouth, IL, and Linda (Andy) Connell of Surprise, AZ as well his stepsons Dave Wendell of Fithian, IL, Steve (Stacy) Wendell and Dennis (Cherie) Wendell of Oakwood, IL.

Charles had 27 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren.

Charles Smith retired from the State Highway where he worked for several years. Charles loved to visit restaurants and share a meal with his family. He enjoyed reading and was an avid coin collector, though his greatest joy was spending time with his large family. In his early years he loved to canoe with his dog, Dondy, and the love of his life, Shirley.

Charles did not wish to have a visitation or funeral service. His hope was that in lieu of flowers, those who cared for him will donate to the Vermilion County Animal Shelter in his honor.
