Charles Lee Kinney, 82, of Danville passed away at 6:45p.m., Thursday, November 20, 2008 at his residence. He was born August 31, 1926 in Catlin, Illinois. He was the son of William John and Helen Lee (Stenner) Kinney. He married the love of his life, Betty Ruth Knapp on September 3, 1948. She survives. They raised seven children: Sharon (John) Reed, Jerry (Sandy) Kinney, Vickie Brownfield, Karen (Richard) Rusk, Connie (Michael) Ollis, Janice (Dale) Van Duyn, and Patrick Kinney. He was blessed with grandchildren he adored: Jim, Jennifer, Chris (deceased), Gene, Scout, Luke, Shane, Amy, Keri, Erin, Jordon, Rachel, Samantha, Laurren, and Chloe. He dearly loved his seven great-grandchildren: Unity, Tristen, Parker, Alex, Rylan, Abigail, and Christian. Charles has three surviving brothers and four sisters: William, Kenneth, Albert, Lois Warner, Edith Earle, Dorothy Peeler, and Jean Conklin. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, John and Joseph. Charles was proud to have served in the United States Navy during WWII. He sailed aboard the Landing Ship Tank (LST) 843, which Charles described as a low, slow, target. He was a member of the state and national LST Associations and enjoyed LST reunions. He attended Catlin Schools and the Industrial Training Institute in Chicago, Illinois. He worked at Allith Prouty, Eureka Printing, and retired from Tee-Pak after twenty years of service. He enjoyed mushrooming in the woods of Catlin, retracing his boyhood steps, fishing, gardening, and photography. His favorite pastime was playing with and enjoying his grandchildren and great grandchildren. A celebration of life for Charles Lee Kinney will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 24, 2008 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 3940 N. Vermilion St., with his cousin, Pastor Darrell Harris and nephew, Pastor Doug Knapp officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 2-6 p.m. Sunday, November 23, 2008 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made in Charles name to the St. Jude Childrens Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105.
