Covington, IN- Charles H. Coffing, 72, of Covington, IN passed away at 1:30 PM on Saturday, May 10, 2014 in Fountain County, IN. He was born on November 12, 1941 in Crawfordsville to Harold Martin and Barbara Kathryn (Goff) Coffing. He first married Ruby Yang who preceded him in death. He later married Faith “Jody” Tanesky on September 1, 1984. She also preceded Charles in death. He is survived by his three children, Rachel Sueann (Nick) Hilweh of Oregon, Angelia K. (Chris) Compton, also of Oregon, and James Frances (Angela) Coffing of Ft. Wayne, IN; three brothers, Harold Eugene (Debbie) Coffing of Lafayette, David (Suzanne) Coffing of Crawfordsville, and James E. (Sheri) Coffing of Covington; a sister, Barbara E. (Doug) McCord of Covington; a step-son, Dave (Marge) Smith of Ft. Wayne, IN; and ten grandchildren, Nicola, Chaz, Leila, Anthony, Kiana, Kathryn, Carson, Autumn, Bailey, and Kaitlyn. In addition to his wives, he was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Brianna. Charles served his country by enlisting in the US Army where he was a Green Beret in the Special Forces. He served active duty from 1960-1967 and later retired from the reserve. Charles was a Covington High School Graduate and earned his bachelors degree from Purdue University. He worked with the US Department of Agriculture as a certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control Officer and was a member of the Soil and Water Conservation Association. Charles was a pilot and had a passion for flying. He was a member of the EAA and enjoyed skydiving. He was a life member of the Pigeon Racers, a past member of Salem United Methodist Church, and had most recently attended the Wabash Valley Bible Baptist Church. A service to celebrate the life of Charles H. Coffing will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at Sunsets Covington Chapel, A Life Celebration Home in Covington, IN. Reverend Doug McCord and Pastor Rich Stoll will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Elmdale, IN. Visitation will be held from 6-8 PM on Friday, May 16, also at Sunsets Covington Chapel, with an additional hour of visitation to be held from 10-11 AM prior to the service on Saturday.
