Charles 'Gene' Highfill

Champaign-Charles "Gene" Highfill of Champaign passed away on Friday, June 29, 2018 at his home in Champaign IL. He was born on July 11, 1936 in Wellington IL. the son of Otis and Ruth Highfill. Gene is survived by his wife Shirley, son, Thomas Alexander, daughters Pamella Horn, Tina Underwood, Shelly Highfill and Lorri (Scott) Yeoward, grandchildren, Nick Wilkins, Tera Garrett, Cortney Highfill, Tiffany Murphy, Adam Hardy, Dylan Whitehead, Taylor and Jesse Alexander, great grandchildren, Preston and Parker Wilkins, Brayden, Kamden and Tinley Garrett, Iva Philbeck, Brendan Murphy-Hubert, Kiyre Murphy, Deonta and Jurrien Hill and Addilyn Hardy. Gene proudly served in the United States Army for six years at Fort Riley attaining the rate of Specialist 4th class . He was employed at Grabit Here and I.G.A. stores, the Ramada Inn and was a bus driver and custodian for Mahomet Seymour school for 30yrs. He did volunteer work at the Danville Genealogy Historical Library, was a member of the Mahomet Christian Church for 35 years and was a member of the Mahomet American Legion post 1015. Gene enjoyed collecting coins, camping, CB radios and had an infinate love for tomatoes. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Eddie Highfill and sisters Ruby Dale and Beulah Alhands. A celebration of Gene's life will be held on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at 11am with a short public viewing one hour prior from 10-11am at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center 710 N. Neil St. Champaign IL. 61820 Visitation will be held on Monday, July 2, 2018 from 5-7pm at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center 710 N. Neil St. Champaign IL. 61820 In lieu of flowers memorials can be made in Gene's name to Mahomet Christian Church in Mahomet IL.
