Charles F. Dyer Jr., 78, of Danville, Illinois, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2019 at his daughters home in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 29, 1940, the son of Charles F. Dyer Sr. and Hazel M. Jarosch. He married Nancy A. Ringoen on Aug 29, 1964 at the Highland Street Lutheran Church in Worcester, Massachusetts. They were married for 44 years.
Charlie grew up in Melrose, Massachusetts and graduated from Melrose High School. During high school he played hockey and golf. He attended the University of Massachusetts and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering in 1963. After graduating from college, he served his country in the U.S Coast Guard. Early in his career, Charlie worked for Grumman Aircraft Corporation in the 1960s in Bethpage, New York. At that time Grumman was the chief contractor for the Apollo Lunar Modules. In 1970, he moved his family to Danville, Illinois to continue his engineering career at Hyster Company, a company specializing in forklift trucks and other material handling equipment. He worked at Hyster Company in Danville for 35 years until his retirement in 2006.
In his retirement years, Charlie spent a lot of his free time serving others. He was a very active member at Bethel Lutheran Church. He was a member of the church council serving as Chair of the Christian Education Committee. Responsibilities of this position included coordinating and teaching Sunday school and vacation bible school. He also sang in the church choir for many years. He was an active member of the Danville Kiwanis Breakfast Club. His activities through the Kiwanis club included volunteering for the Backpack Program, delivering Meals on Wheels, and tutoring children in math and reading at the Boys and Girls Club in Danville. He also volunteered for the Danville Art League with Nancy for many years.
In addition to keeping busy with his volunteer activities, Charlie really enjoyed spending time with family and friends, fishing, and playing golf. He also liked watching sporting events on TV and attending local sporting events. His sports interests included watching the Chicago Cubs, Danville Vikings football, Fighting Illini basketball and football, PGA golf, Danville Dasher hockey games, and the Danville Dans baseball team. His favorite television shows were Wheel of Fortune and Blue Bloods. He also liked to show people he was thinking of them by sending cards for birthdays and holidays to family and friends. He touched many peoples lives and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Preceding Charlie in death are both of his parents and his wife Nancy.
Survivors include his daughter Karen Gastrau and her husband Steve; his 2 sons Chuck & Ken Dyer and their wives Heather and Dawn; and 10 grandchildren; Steven, Brent, Katie, Emily, Sydney, Cameron, Addyson, Brock, Brody, and Ella. Also surviving are his brothers Phil, Bobby, and Tommy Dyer as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 4 -7 pm on Sunday January 20, 2019 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center 3940 N. Vermilion Street in Danville, Illinois. Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday January 21, 2019 at Bethel Lutheran Church, 901 W Fairchild St., Danville, Illinois. Officiating the service will be Pastor Ed Stone. Burial will be held at Sunset Memorial Park in Danville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Charlies name to Bethel Lutheran Church, 901 W Fairchild St., Danville, Illinois.
