Charles Dietkus, 91, died peacefully in his sleep September 6, 2007 at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center in Danville after a short illness. He was born January 30, 1916 to Joseph and Pauline Dietkus. Charles was a lifelong resident of Georgetown, Illinois. After graduating from Georgetown High School, he joined the CCC to help support his family during the Depression. Charles was a decorated World War II veteran. He served in the Philippines and received a direct battlefield commission to lieutenant. He was also awarded three bronze stars. After the war, he returned to Georgetown and farmed the family homestead for over 50 years. Charles was a jack-of-all-trades, and he kept up with all the latest technology. He was an avid reader and enjoyed classical music and playing chess and solitaire on his computer. He maintained an avid interest in all aspects of worldwide news, past and present. His parents, brothers, Joseph, Tony, George and Edward and sisters, Pauline, Ann, Lucy and Helen, preceded him in death. Surviving members are Mary York of Georgetown, Illinois and Sara Idasek of Berkeley, Illinois. He had numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at 9:00 a.m. until funeral services at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 10, 2007 at Sunsets Houghton-Leasure Funeral Home. Burial: Lithuanian Cemetery, Westville, Illinois.
