Charles B. Vandevender passed away on November 8, 2023 at his home in Dana, Indiana. He was born May 6, 1927 in rural Vermilion County, Illinois.
Charles married Mary F. Ramsey on January 25, 1953. They spent 70 wonderful years of marriage together before his passing. She survives. Also surviving are their children Carl Vandevender of Lafayette, Indiana, Donald Vandevender of Dana, Indiana, and Linda (Forest) Hoyt of Georgetown, Illinois; grandchildren Robby Crain of Nashville, Tennessee and Robert Lamb of Dana, Indiana; and great-grandchildren Ella, Dylan, and Willow Lamb.
He is preceded in death by his son Tom Vandevender.
Charles attended Cayuga High School and went to work on his family farm and later the brickyard in Cayuga. From 1953- 1955, he served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Following his discharge, he began his 27 year-long career for General Motors in Danville until he was eligible for retirement. Charles went on to own and operate Horseshoe Salvage in Dana for over 20 years following his retirement from GM. In his spare time, Charles enjoyed attending auctions, playing cards or checkers, and spending time with his grandchildrenabove all else.
A graveside service will take place at 10:30 am EST on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at Thomas Cemetery in Newport, Indiana. A viewing for friends and family will be at Sunset Funeral Homes DeVerter Chapel in Cayuga beginning at 9:30 am EST prior to the graveside service.
