Cecile Harte McCarthy died at Presence United Samaritans Medical Center on Sunday, July 12, 2015. Cecile was born on December 22, 1923 to Agnes Magner Harte and Joseph Philip Harte in Kankakee, Illinois. She is survived by son David (Lynn) of Peoria, grandsons Timothy (Stephanie) of Peoria, Brian (Wendy) of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Daniel (Christina) of Cincinnati, Ohio, great grandchildren Megan, Finnigan, and Merrill of Cincinnati, Donovan of Raleigh, and David, Madeline, and Nathan of Peoria, daughter-in-law Suzanne and a very special niece and several special nephews. Cecile was preceded in death by her parents, husband Edmund, son James, sisters Mary M. Leider, Margaret Hughes, brother George McIntyre, and a very special aunt, Mary Magner Kaffer. Cecile married Edmund J. McCarthy at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Evanston, Illinois on June 17, 1944. They were the parents of David Henry and James Magner McCarthy. Cecile graduated from Mt. St. Mary's Academy and Barat College, Lake Forest, Illinois, completing her advanced education at Illinois College, Jacksonville, Illinois and Illinois State University. She was employed by National College of Education in Evanston, Illinois, Milner Library at Illinois State University, and Illinois School for the Deaf in Jacksonville, Illinois. Upon relocating to Danville with her husband, Dr. Edmund J. McCarthy, Cecile joined the Danville Public Library staff as a part-time reference librarian. She later advanced to full-time, planning and implementing the newly added Library Extension Services Division with input and assistance from the Altrusa Club (Outreach) concerning their proposed service project, Library Service for the Homebound. Her talents included enlisting and encouraging volunteers, raising money to keep programs going, and always conducting herself in a professional, businesslike, supportive, enthusiastic, and resourceful manner. Cecile also served on the Neighborhood House Board, President of the Altrusa Club, board member of CRIS, Kiwanis Golden K, Provena Women Aware Committee, Danville Executive Club, and a member of Danville Garden Club. She was a devout member of St. Paul's Catholic Church. Visitation will be at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, July 20, 2015, with the funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Church in Danville. Sunset Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Burial will follow the mass at Sunset Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to St. Paul's Church, Danville Public Library, or CRIS Senior Center.
