Tilton - Caroline S. Liggett (Freed), 88, of Tilton, passed away at 2:23 AM on May 11, 2026, at The Waters of Covington. Caroline was born on April 7, 1938, in Eugene, IN, the daughter of George and Luella (Cox) Freed. She married Shelby J. Liggett, Jr. on November 14, 1958, in Danville, IL, he passed February 8, 2021.
Survivors include her three daughters, Sue Marzbannia of Danville, IL, Cheryl (Kenneth) Reynolds of Tilton, IL and Cathy Kamplain of Danville, IL; five grandchildren, Sadie Huckstadt, Sara Marzbannia, Brian Reynolds, Stefani (Nate) Phillips and Maxtyn Kamplain, as well as eight great-grandchildren.
Caroline is preceded in death by her parents; one son, Shelby Liggett, III; five brothers; three sisters and one son-in-law, Wesley Kamplain.
Caroline was a Cayuga High School graduate and worked for Illinois Bell and Grab-It-Here stores in Danville. She was the switchboard operator and office secretary at Sears for thirteen years. Caroline was a member of Faith Church of Christ in Danville where she had previously served as the church secretary. She loved traveling the US, flower gardening, and sewing for her children and grandchildren.
Christmas was her favorite holiday and she enjoyed collecting Santa figurines and paper weights. She was a devoted wife to Shelby and cherished her children and grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life for Caroline Liggett will be held Monday, May 18, 2026, at 11 AM with visitation to be held from 10 – 11 AM prior to the service at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 3940 North Vermilion Street, Danville, IL 61865. Burial will take place at Greenwood Cemetery. Preacher Bill Carpenter will officiate.
