She was the youngest of two daughters, born February 16, 1937 to James H. and Pearl R. (Pettitt) Machesney in rural Annawan, Illinois. Carol attended the Annawan School from first through twelfth grades, graduating in 1955. She was an accomplished musician who played the saxophone, piano, organ, violin and marimba. While at Western she met Blaine Bonynge and they married July 12, 1959. They both accepted teaching positions in Alton, IL and later relocated to Danville, IL when Blaine accepted the principalship at Danville High School.
