Carol Jean (Machesney) Bonynge passed peacefully from this life at her home during the late evening of October 11, 2023, following a brief illness. She was the youngest of two daughters, born February 16, 1937 to James H. and Pearl R. (Pettitt) Machesney in rural Annawan, Illinois. Carol attended the Annawan School from first through twelfth grades, graduating in 1955. She was an accomplished musician who played the saxophone, piano, organ, violin and marimba. She often accompanied other musicians and soloists for music performances and competitions and played piano and organ at the Fairview Church in Annawan.
Upon graduation from high school, she first attended Augustana College and later transferred to Western Illinois University, graduating in 1959 with a Bachelor's Degree in Home Economics Education. While at Western she met Blaine Bonynge and they married July 12, 1959. They both accepted teaching positions in Alton, IL and later relocated to Danville, IL when Blaine accepted the principalship at Danville High School. They embraced their new community and actively participated in civic organizations and community events.
An avid crafter and painter, she was known for her beautiful handmade flower arrangements, hand painted ceramics and other gifts that she both sold in local stores and gave to her family.
Carol had a zest for life and loved people. She never knew a stranger. She was a beautiful woman inside and out with a sunny disposition, hearty laugh, and an infectious, positive outlook.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Pearl Machesney; husband, Blaine Bonynge; brothers-in-law Dean Browning and Jack Bonynge; sister-in-law Marian McCreight and her husband Larry as well as her longtime life companion, Dean Hanson.
Those who remain to cherish her memory include her sister, Ardythe Browning, sister-in-law, Donna Bonynge; brothers-in-law, Ronnie (Judi) Bonynge and Roger (Jean) Bonynge 11 nephews and nieces: Lexa, Bryan, Lisa, Mark, Lori, Bruce, Jeff, Rusty, Greg, Tracy, and Pam; many great and great-great nephews and nieces; Arden Nowers, her friend of 80 years and countless others who knew and loved her.
Carol was able to return to her home in her remaining days due to the extraordinary love and commitment of her wonderful friends Tony Hanson, Marsha VanHook, and Nancy Marlatt. The family also wishes to thank OSF Sacred Heart Hospice for providing excellent care and comfort.
In accordance with Carols wishes, graveside rites will be accorded by Rev. Dan Wright on Friday, October 20, 2023 at 11 a.m. at the Fairview Cemetery in Annawan, IL with a celebratory lunch at the church immediately following. Donations may be made to Fairview United Methodist Church or a charity of donors choice.
