Calvin Lewayne Hickman passed peacefully in Carle Foundation Hospital on May 23, 2024, after a battle with pneumonia. Calvin was born October 21, 1941, in South Bend, Indiana. During his childhood he moved frequently throughout the South with his folks and his four siblings. During the late 1950s Calvin attended the Palace Movie Theatre one evening where he was smitten with a young lady trying to sell him a hot dog at the concession stand. In true Calvin fashion, he knew what he wanted so he settled on a box of Junior Mints and a date with that young lady. After a long courtship, Calvin traded his Harley Davidson motorcycle for a diamond ring and asked for Carolyn Calhouns hand in marriage. They were married on November 11, 1962, in Danville, Illinois where they shared 62+ years of love, laughter, friendship, and commitment.
Calvin enjoyed an extensive career as a welder in the Plumbers & Steamfitters Local Union 157 and was also self-employed with his own welding shop where he performed custom work and used his creative abilities in designing belt buckles with stainless steel pipe. He was resourceful and made his own tools to work on his never-ending projects. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting and taxidermy. He also loved photography and developed his own photos. He enjoyed working on cars as well as painting them. In the Spring and Summer, you could often find him sporting his straw hat on his tractor or lawn mower as he enjoyed the outdoors immensely. He also enjoyed gardening, watching old Westerns, listening to Dolly Parton, eating Carols homemade blackberry cobbler, drinking Coca Cola, and was fond of the Beef Houses coconut cream pie. He took considerable pride in chatting with his friends at the local donut shop, telling jokes, and reminiscing about all the trade deals he made over the years. Above all, Calvin loved his family.
Calvin is preceded in death by his parents (Fred & Geneva Hickman), his brother (Melvin Hickman), his sister (Evelene Burgess). He is survived, forever loved, and deeply missed by his wife (Carolyn Hickman); his son, Mark Hickman (Kathy); his daughter Michelle Boucher (Dale), his siblings: Merlene Cole, Carroll Wayne Hickman; his five grandchildren: Rita Coffey (Truston), Katie Hickman, Vincent Hickman, Brayden Boucher, Ashton Boucher; his two great-grandchildren: Ella Coffey, Evelyn Coffey; he is also survived by many loving relatives and friends.
