Burley J. Penninger, 93 of Georgetown, passed away at 10:15am, Sunday, January 31, 2016, at his home. He was born on May 27, 1922, in Charleston, IL, the son of Burley and Marie {Crim} Penninger, both deceased. He was united in marriage to Alena Sheppard on December 9, 1944, in Portsmouth, VA, until her passing on September 27, 2008. He is survived by: his son, Michael Penninger of Huntsville, AL; his daughter, Penny Sweeney of Georgetown; his grandchildren., Michael Trey Penninger, Alyse Penninger, Derick Young, & Chris Sweeney; his sisters, Beverly & Patricia. He was preceded in death by his son, Larry, and brothers, Edwin & Bryan. Burley worked at Hyster Company in Danville until his retirement. He was a proud Veteran of the US Navy serving in WWII and in Korea. He was a member of the US Navy Underwater Demolition Team 7 and 30 during WWII. Burley loved working on his home and loved having animals around, especially his cats, Lucky & Suzy, and his dog, Duke. Burley loved spending time with his family and will be dearly missed. The family would like to extend a special "Thank You" to Carle Hospice and to Dr. Halloran for their care and support of Burley and the family. A private graveside service will be held at Georgetown Cemetery with Pastor James Blue officiating. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Dornblaser Post #203. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations should be given in Burley's name to Carle Hospice. Sunset's Houghton-Leasure Funeral Home assisted his family with arrangements.
