Brent "Mort" Young, 62, of Danville passed away Thursday, September 28th at Carle Hospital. He was born March 8th, 1955, to Raymond and Freida Young in Terre Haute, IN. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother, and a fierce and loyal friend to both lifelong buddies from his hometown of Paris and acquaintances met during his 20 years as a Danville Police Officer. As President of the PB/PA, he worked tirelessly to serve and protect his fellow police officers. He continued his passion for serving the Danville community and fought daily, with an overwhelming sense of pride and commitment to integrity, to make the city a better, safer place for all its residents. After an injury on duty, Mort retired to serve his most challenging role: Mister Mom to his daughter and youngest son. He spent the following years perfecting the art of the grill for his family, with a vodka lemonade in hand and the radio tuned to the old 99.1 rock station. Though he was always planning his next trip to Sturgis on his beloved Harley, never without a blue bandana and on-brand Harley t-shirt, he most cherished the long, winding weekend rides with his wife or one of his three kids. His final years at Colonial Manor nursing home, courtesy of a Parkinson's diagnosis and a series of strokes that managed to enhance his enigma-like charisma (and boundary-pushing sense of humor), only served to intensify the love he held for his family - his wife who he called to check on every 1-2 hours, his daughter who would frequently fly home to visit, and his two sons who came together to sit with him every weekend. The night before he passed was spent with his wife and children, a plate of barbecue ribs, and a steady stream of the guitar-heavy rock music that seemed to follow him wherever he went. The morning his watch ended, he had his final wish granted: leaving with his wife, Pam, asleep at his side. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond, and mother/idol, Freida. He is survived by his wife Pam, sons Darren (Katie) and Evan, daughter Erica (Ross), grandchildren Olivia, Ava, Addison, brothers Mercer (Betty) and Dana (Mary), sister Angie (Brent) Walls, in addition to a number of adoring brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, many friends, neighbors, former colleagues, and nurses. Thank you to his family at Colonial Manor and to his special friend Mike Barkman for the love and care they gave Mort for the past two years.
