Betty Sue Nicholas

Betty Sue Nicholas, 74, of Westville peacefully passed on February 21, 2024 at The Gibson Family Center for Hospice Care in Terre Haute. She was born on January 26, 1950 in Danville, Illinois to parents Mary and Franklin Steele.

Betty was always known for her caring nature, so it came as no surprise when she became an LPN following high school and made a career out of nursing. She retired from the Illiana Veterans Affairs after many years of service and immediately got right back to work taking care of others at the Vermilion Manor Nursing Home. She then began working for the State of Illinois as a home health care nurse until a couple of months before her passing. She married Joseph "Skip" Nicholas in May of 1970. The two shared 39 wonderful years together before his passing in 2010.

Betty loved to be outside in her pool and took every opportunity to swim. She was an active part of all of her grandchildrens lives and looked forward to spending time with them. She also enjoyed selling Younique makeup.

Betty is survived by her children Joy Nicholas, Joseph "Joey" Nicholas, Jr., Julie Nicholas, and Yvonne Nicholas; 11 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her siblings Barbara (John) Crise and Barry (Tina) Steele; sisters-in-law Candice and Flo Steele; best friend Shirley Moody; friends Ken Mowery and family; her loyal dogs Champ, Diamond, and Red; a cat Keke, and bird Joey.

In addition to her husband, Betty is preceded by her parents; son Shane Nicholas; and brothers Robert and William Steele.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, February 29, 2024 from 5-8pm at Sunset Funeral Homes Urbas Chapel, located at 414 S. State Street in Westville. A funeral service will be the following day on Friday, March 1, 2024 at 11:00 am, also at the funeral home. She will be buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Danville following services.
