Betty L. Triezenberg

Betty Triezenberg, later known as Gabby, 85, of Mahomet, IL, and later Sacramento, CA, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2024, surrounded by loved ones. She was born Betty Lou Trhlik on August 2, 1939, in Hillsboro, IL, and lived a life full of love, dedication, and service to others.

Betty graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1957, where she was the marching band drum majorette, and went on to earn a degree in Education in English and Physical Education from Illinois State University in 1960. She began her teaching career in Atwood and Urbana, IL, before moving to Mahomet, IL, where she taught various grades in the Mahomet-Seymour School District. She dedicated her career to teaching in the district, inspiring and mentoring young people. She retired from Sangamon Elementary physical education in 1994 after more than 30 years of service, leaving a powerful impact on the lives of students, parents, teachers, family, and friends.

In 1977, Betty married Ivan Triezenberg. Together, they were actively involved in the Mahomet-Seymour Music Boosters, supporting the school’s music programs with enthusiasm. Betty’s son, Randy (Gibb) Triezenberg, who graduated from MSHS in 1987, was active in the MSHS chorus, marching band, madrigals, and drama club. Betty was an enthusiastic supporter of these programs, dedicating many long hours to them.

Betty and Ivan also participated in many events of the Champaign County Shrine Club, where Ivan was a long-time member before his passing in 1999. They were also dedicated members of the First Baptist Church of Mahomet.

In 2008, Betty moved to Sacramento, CA, to be closer to her son Randy and his husband, Mark, who affectionately called her "Mamacita." Embracing a new chapter, she began going by the name Gabby, a nickname Ivan had given her due to her propensity to linger after every event chatting with people. Gabby quickly became known for her warmth, hospitality, and zest for life. While living a very active life at Carefree Senior Living apartments, she met Greg Armes and formed a fast friendship. Over time, their friendship blossomed into a deep relationship, and they eventually moved in together to solidify their bond. Gabby and Greg were the hosts of many parties at Carefree, bringing joy to those around them with their love for dancing and community. They loved attending dances and karaoke nights, becoming well-loved figures in their community.

A lifelong animal lover, Gabby was especially fond of her "grandpuppies," Kaylee and Brooklyn, Mark and Randy’s two Australian Labradoodles, and relished every opportunity to babysit and spoil them. Gabby and Greg regularly attended Pioneer Congregational United Church of Christ in Sacramento, where they found a welcoming community.

Gabby is survived by her loving partner of 10 years, Greg Armes, her son and son-in-law, Randy Triezenberg and Mark Viviano, all of Sacramento, CA, her beloved sister Mary Truax of Mahomet, IL, and many nieces and nephews. Her kindness, dedication to education, joie de vivre, and love for her family and community will be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to have known her. Gabby's legacy of love, education, and community will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves behind a world brighter for her presence and a community enriched by her spirit.

Visitation will occur on Tuesday, September 10, from 10:00 a.m. to noon, followed by funeral services at noon at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center Mahomet Chapel.1102 Churchill Rd. Mahomet, IL. Following the service, she will be laid to rest next to Ivan at Grandview Memorial Gardens.
