Betty J. Vanderpoorten

WESTVILLE - Betty J. Vanderpoorten, 83, of Westville, passed away at 7:40am, Friday, December 22nd, 2006, at her home. She was born on November 26th, 1923, in Westville to Peter J. and Elizabeth (Hall) Chalkus. She married Leon Vanderpoorten, Sr. on June 5th, 1945, in Westville. He preceded her in death. Those who will miss her include: her children, Leonette V. Elsberg of Westville, & Denise E. Vanderpoorten of Chicago, IL; her grandchildren, Monique E. Elsberg-Johs, Jami S. Vanderpoorten-Baum, & Betty Ann Vanderpoorten; her great grandchildren, Jacob c. Miller, Joshua L. Miller, Ashley Johs, & Jaiden A. Baum. Her parents, her son-Leon (JoAnne) Vanderpoorten, two brothers-Peter (Margaret) Chalkus and Thomas Chalkus and a sister-Juanita (James) Wagner, as well as her beloved Aunt Helen Nellie Rolinits, preceded her in death. She graduated from St. Catherine School of Nursing East Chicago, Indiana. She was a cadet nurse during WWII taking care of American & Foreign Prisoners of War. She worked as a nurse for years before retiring. She was a member of the Church of Christ of Westville and the American Legion Post #51. Betty enjoyed quilting, collecting eggs, oil painting, & reading. She loved to tend her flower garden. She especially cherished the time spent with her family. As per her wishes, Betty will be cremated. At this time there will be no visitation or services. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Sunset-Urbas Funeral Chapel of Westville is in charge of arrangements.
