Bertie May {Bradley} Moore, 97, of Oakwood passed away on August 12, 2026 at the Hawthorne Inn in Danville, Illinois. She was born on January 28, 1929 to the late Albert and Clara {Shirley} Bradley. Bertie was born and raised on a farm in Ogden, Illinois and also graduated from Ogden High School, where she was valedictorian of her class. She would later marry the love of her life, Leroy Moore, on July 29, 1947. He preceded her in death on May 10, 2016.
She spent many years at home raising their four children before entering the workforce as an office manager at Ludwig Insurance Agency, later to be known as Heartland Insurance. She was known for her hard work and dedication, working even into her 70’s. Bertie spent many evenings on the bleachers watching her kids’, grandkids’, and great grandkids’ ballgames. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, upholstery and especially playing cards. She was a proud member of the Oakwood Christian Church and the Oakwood Women’s Club as well.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law Sam Hillis, grandson Bradley Hillis, 3 sisters, and 4 brothers.
She will be sorely missed by her daughter Rebecca Hillis, of Lake Village, IN; sons, Jim (Jeanie) Moore of Catlin, Jeffrey (Linda) Moore of Charleston, and Brian Moore of Urbana; her sister Evelyn June Osterbur of Royal; and 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, and a special “extra daughter” Yamani Wijesekara. Bertie’s family was always the most important thing in her life and prioritized before all else.
Bertie’s family would like to extend a warm thank you to the staff at Hawthorne Inn for the wonderful care and support shown to Bertie these past several months.
A visitation will be held from 2 – 4 pm on Sunday, August 16, 2026 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center’s Oakwood Chapel, located at 105 E. South Main St. in Oakwood. A funeral service celebrating her life will take place the following day on Monday, August 17, 2026 at 10 am, also at the funeral home. She will be laid to rest next to Leroy at Stearns Cemetery following services that day. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be made in her name to the Comet Power of Pink (at 107 Meade St., Catlin, IL 61817) or the Oakwood Fire & Rescue. Online condolences, fond memories, and pictures can be shared with Bertie’s family on her Tribute Wall at www.sunsetfuneralhome.com
