Bertha Jane Phillips, 90, of Big Stone Gap, Virginia, formerly of Tilton, went to be with the lord at 1:28 p.m. Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at her daughters home with the family by her side. Bertha was born on March 29, 1917 in Marshall, Illinois, the daughter of Grant Arthur and Lena (Clouse) Tapscott. She married Woodrow Phillips on September 2, 1933 in Mattoon, Illinois. He preceded her in death. She is survived by her one son- Delbert L. (Joyce) Phillips of Catlin; one daughter- Shirley Ann (Thomas) Harris of Big Stone Gap, Virginia; one sister- Mary Jean Jennings of Las Vegas, New Mexico; 13 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons- Richard and Larry Phillips, seven brothers, five sisters, one grandson- Michael Phillips and two great-grandsons- Lee Claypoole and Greg De Haas. Bertha was a member of Catlin Church of Christ for several years. She was employed by the Grab it Here Stores for 25 years as an assistant manager, until she retired. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. She loved to sew, go to church and the Chicago Cubs. She enjoyed traveling every year to the east coast and the west coast with her husband. She was very family oriented and loved her grandchildren very much. A Celebration of the Life of Bertha Jane Phillips will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 25, 2008 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center, with Deacon Richard Smith officiating. Visitation will be from 1:00 " 2:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Oakridge Cemetery following the service. Memorials may be made to the St. Judes Children Hospital.
