Bernerd "Bernie" Brewer,88, a beloved figure known for his dedication to family, friends, and a lifetime of hard work, passed away on May 25, 2026, at the Danville, Illinois Veteran Affairs facility. He was born on December 19, 1937, in Danville, Illinois, but he spent the majority of his years contributing to his Tilton, Illinois community and sharing cherished moments with those closest to him.
Bernie’s career was marked by steadfast commitment and service. He worked for many years at Heatcraft, where his diligence was well respected. He also devoted himself to assisting his son Jerry at B&B Tree Service, demonstrating not only his strong work ethic but also his deep devotion to family collaboration and support.
Those who knew Bernie remember him fondly for his warm personality and love of simple pleasures. He took great joy in spending time with family and friends, which was at the heart of his life. Bernie delighted in mowing his yard, hosting his annual rummage sale, and enjoyed many outings to eat with his dear friend Dan Pierce. These moments reflected his zest for life and the value he placed on personal connections.
Bernie’s passing was met with great support from the Palliative Care staff who assisted him with compassion and respect during his final days. His departure leaves behind a legacy filled with kindness and a spirit that enriched the lives of those he touched.
He is survived by his devoted children: Lisa (Tim) Jenkins, Sherrie (Duane Nichols) Brewer, and Vickie (RJ) Watson; and by his treasured grandchildren: Tim Jenkins Jr., Kevin Phelps, Brittney Petticrew, Matthew (Haleigh) Morrison, Kyle (Ashley) Brewer, Paige Milewski, and Travis Decker, twelve great grandchildren. Also surviving him are his brother-in-law Curt (Marsha) Gordon, and many nieces and nephews.
Bernie was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Stella (Tapscott) Brewer; his beloved wife Janice (Gordon) Brewer; his sons Jerry Brewer and Troy Brewer; one brother; and four sisters.
A visitation will be held on May 30, 2026, at the Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center located at 414 S State St, Westville, Illinois. The visitation will be held at 1:00 p.m.- 2:00 p.m. This gathering will provide family, friends, and community members the opportunity to honor Bernie’s life and share condolences. A service will be held at 2pm, with burial to follow at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Catlin.
