Covington, Ind. -- Basil B. "Beanie" Niccum, 82, of Covington, Indiana, took a walk to remember at 4:12 p.m. EDT Wednesday, April 23, 2008 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was born November 17, 1925 in Vermillion County, Indiana, the son of the late Alta Franklin and Lena Grace Swem Niccum. He married Alice Keller on May 18, 1946 in Covington, Indiana. She survives. Other survivors include: one daughter, Lisa(Ed)Pearman of Newport, Indiana; eight grandchildren, Alan(Kayla)Phelps of Newport, Indiana; David(Megan)Phelps of Covington, Indiana; Laiken Phelps of Dana, Indiana; Michael Ray Phelps of Perrysville, Indiana; Mikael Anthony Phelps of Covington, Indiana; Morgan Phelps, Samantha Phelps and Olivia Grace Pearman all of Newport, Indiana; three great granddaughters, Kaytlan, Hannah and Haileigh Phelps; one brother, Donald(June)Niccum of Gessie, Indiana; special nephew, Sonny(Susie)Keller of Covington, Indiana; three special nieces, Jody(Gary)Rush of Waynetown, Indiana; Susie(Bill)Keller of Veedersburg, Indiana and Linda Reik of Danville, Illinois and several other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Norma Reik. Basil owned and operated the Niccum Tax Service for 40 plus years. He was the former Covington Post Master for 17 years. Basil was a veteran of W.W. II serving with the United States Army in the Company G 326th Glider Infantry, 82ND Parachute Division. He was a 1942 graduate of Perrysville High School. He was a member of the Covington V.F.W. Post # 2395 and was a past Quarter Master and Commander. Basil was a former volunteer on the Covington Fire Department serving 25 plus years and Covington City Councilman. He was also a past member of the Olin Fire Brigade. He coached the Covington Girls Softball League from 1974 thru 1989. Basil enjoyed yard work and spending time with his grandchildren. Funeral services: 2 p.m. EDT Sunday, April 27, 2008 at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana; Officiating: Rev. Steve Vitaniemi; Burial: Lower Mound Cemetery north of Perrysville, Indiana with military graveside rites conducted by the Covington V.F.W. #2395; Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. EDT Saturday, April 26, 2008 at the funeral home.
