Quaker, Ind. -- Barbara L. Phelps, 77, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister, formerly of Quaker, Indiana and a resident of the Heritage House in Clinton, Indiana for the past 2 1/2 years, went peacefully to be with her Lord and Creator at 7:40 a.m. EDT Sunday(September 16, 2007) at the Heritage House of Clinton. She was born February 19, 1930 in Whitesville, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Leonard H. and Anna McPherson Howard. She married Lessie V. Phelps on February 3, 1947 in Owensboro, Kentucky. He survives. Other survivors include: two daughters, Judith(Charles,Jr.)Moody of Westville, Illinois and Mary Christine "Chris"(Tom)Beaven of Clinton, Indiana; six sons, John(Vickey)Phelps of St. Bernice, Indiana; Leonard T.(Patti)Phelps of Cayuga, Indiana; Stephen "Steve"(Cindy)Phelps of Dana, Indiana; Anthony W.(Lori Lee)Phelps of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Michael R.(Cheryl)Phelps of Cayuga, Indiana and Joseph M. Phelps of Dana, Indiana; nineteen grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; two sisters, Angela(Bernie)Clark and Rosemary(John)Duncan both of Owensboro, Kentucky; two brothers, George D.(Ginny)Howard and John E.(Bernadette)Howard both of Owensboro, Kentucky. She was preceded in death by six sisters and one brother. Barbara was a devout catholic. She was a past member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rockville, Indiana (44 years) before moving her membership to the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Clinton, Indiana. She also attended the Immaculate Conception Church in Montezuma, Indiana. Barbara was a very talented singer and sang at several V.A. Hospitals during W.W. II. She also sang in many choirs and at festivals during her life. Barbara was a member of the Parke County Choral Club. She enjoyed working crossword and word search puzzles,bowling and playing scrabble. Cremation was chosen. A memorial mass will be held Saturday, September 29, 2007 at 2 p.m. EDT at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Clinton, Indiana. Following services a Celebration of Life dinner will be held at the Dana United Methodist Church, Dana, Indiana at 5 p.m. EDT. Contributions may be made to the Hospice of the Wabash Valley, 400 8th Avenue, Terre Haute, Indiana 47804; Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 619 South 5th Street, Clinton, Indiana 47842 or to the St. Joseph Catholic Church, 217 East Ohio Street, Rockville, Indiana 47872.
