Barbara 'Bunny' Shaffer

Oakwood - Barbara L. "Bunny" Shaffer, 81, of Oakwood passed away at 10:26 AM on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at Presence United Samaritans Medical Center in Danville. She was born on October 10, 1936 in Brooklyn, NY to John and Edna (Johnson) Weiss. She married Dee Shaffer on November 11, 1957 in Riverdale, IL. He preceded her in death on July 6, 2014. She is survived by three children, Susan (Christian) Easton of Bloomington, IN, Jack Shaffer of Rantoul, and Sharon Richardson of Oakwood; three grandchildren, Christopher Richardson, Shanelle (David) Huffman, and Colten Hackman; and two great-grandsons, Madden and Camden Huffman. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents. Bunny passed into Heaven her way; with her feet uncovered, the TV turned to Channel 10, and holding a photo of her beloved dog, Lexi. Her hospital discharge plan simply stated "Heaven." She has been called "Bunny" since the age of 5 when she developed lifelong friendships with Joan, Betty, Millie, Nancy, and Sharon. For over 35 years, Bunny was a manager of many H & R Block offices in the Chicago area and Danville, IL, teaching corporate tax classes on the side. Bunny volunteered tirelessly for 45 years to support the annual Turtle Races, a local grass roots club formed for the purpose of raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for charitable causes. She could often be found at the Possum Trot planning and organizing the annual event. A service to celebrate the life of Bunny Shaffer will be held at 3 PM on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Sunset's Oakwood Chapel at 105 E. South Main St. in Oakwood. Pastor Christian Easton will officiate. Cremation rites will be accorded following the services. Visitation will be held from 1-3 PM prior to the service on Saturday, also at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, Bunny has requested that donations be made to the Citizens for Animal Rescue and Adoption (CARA) at 609 E 5th St., Tilton, IL, 61833.
