Austin Speed Jr.

Austin Broughton Speed Jr., age 64, of Danville, passed away on Monday, October 5, 2009 at his home. He was born March 13, 1945 in Cleveland, Ohio the son of Austin B. Sr. and Mary Elizabeth (Kynett) Speed. Austin was raised by his father and loving stepmother Katherine Louise Kingdon. He was married to Janet Lee Petrino and then to Patricia Ann Bertucci before marrying Mary (Robinson) Bunting on September 20, 1996 in Danville. She survives. Austin is also survived by his children: Austin B. IV( Julie Sue )Speed of Georgetown, Kentucky, Scott Anthony Speed of Cold Spring Harbor, New York, Mary Elizabeth Kynett Speed of Ashburn, Virginia, Katherine Louise Kingdon Speed of Ashburn, Virginia, David MacGregor Speed of Danville, Thomas Matthew (Sarah) Reeves of West Seneca, New York, Noah Nathaniel Reeves of Danville, Samuel Evan Bunting of Danville; two brothers: Robert Kynett Speed of Bay Village, Ohio, John Goodwin Speed of Asheville, North Carolina; and four grandchildren: Isaiah Matthew Reeves, Ana Isabella Reeves, Elijah Jesse Reeves, and Malakai Thomas Reeves. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother: Thomas Hayes Speed. Austin served as a Lt. Commander in the United States Coast Guard. He received a Doctorate in Finance and worked as a financial consultant until his retirement. Austin loved sailing, and participated in the Americas Cup. He was an avid skier; he served on the Olympic Committee for the United States Ski Team and coordinated the downhill and slalom ski races at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. Austin loved his two dogs: Sophie and Lorenzo. He was a member of the New York and Chicago Yacht Clubs. Austin was a member of the First Baptist Church of Danville. A celebration of the life of Austin Speed will be held at 6 pm on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at Sunset Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Danville. Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 pm at the funeral home. Per Austins wishes cremation will take place after the service. Email condolences may be sent to his family at: www.sunsetfuneralhome.com.
