Arland E. Sonny Miller, 73, of Danville, Illinois passed away on October 2, 2010 at his home after a short battle with brain cancer. Arland was born December 30, 1936 in Danville, as the first son of Otto and Mary (Shedlock) Miller. He graduated from Bismarck High School. He was stationed with the army in Germany. It was there that he met and later married Irmgard Makko on August 1, 1962 in Hanau, Germany. She preceded him on January 31, 2007. He is survived by his daughter Susan, his son-in-law, Joerg and his two grandchildren Lana and Martin all residing in Hamburg, Germany. As well as his closest nephew Les Miller of Danville. Survivors also include his ten sisters and their spouses: Evelyn Brown of Bismarck, Barbara Weaver of Danville, Genevieve (Gerald) Roberts of Penfield, Marilyn (James) Reifsteck of Tolono, Loretta (Chester) Reifsteck of Henning, Flora Belle (Richard) Knight of Danville, Frances Youmans of Armstrong, Rita (John) Shepherd of Danville, Nancy (Chester) Towner of Cayuga, IN and Rose Mary (Gerald) Moss of Danville. His beloved dog, Marla was his constant companion. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, three brothers, several nephews and his wife. Arland worked as a maintenance mechanic at Quaker Oats/Pepsico for 22 years before retiring in 2000. Prior to that at Allith Prouty for 14 years. Tending to his fathers farm in Bismarck and gardening were his lifelong hobbies. He also enjoyed traveling to Door County, Wisconsin, Germany, and going on cruises. He was a member of the Vermilion County Farm Assoc., and the Oberlander German Club in Terre Haute, Indiana. The family would like to extend their thanks to the caregivers from Alpha Care, as well as the Provena Hospice nurses for their wonderful support and compassionate care. A Celebration of Arlands Life will be held at 11:00 am, Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at Sunset Funeral Home & Cremation Center, a Life Celebration Home 3940 N. Vermilion St. Danville, IL with Pastor Glenn Huffman officiating. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Following the service, per his wishes he will be cremated and laid to rest with a private family service at Sunset Memorial Park.
