Urbana- Alfred Smith, 92, of Urbana, passed away on June 6, 2014 at Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana. He was born on June 12, 1921 in Jeanette, PA, the son of William and Ada (Davidson) Smith. He married Natalie Malkus on October 10, 1943 in Chicago, IL. Natalie preceded him in death in 1997. He will be deeply missed by his daughter, JoAnn (Larry) Baumann of Glencoe, IL, son, Bob (Marion) Smith of Mahomet, IL, brother, Philip Smith of Pittsburgh, PA, six grandchildren, Becca (Joe Valcik) Smith; Jonah, Jonathan and Alex Smith, Alyse (Evan) Middleton, Erin (David) Abzug and two great grandchildren, Rowan and Liam Abzug, many beloved nieces and nephews. Alfred was preceded in death by his wife, parents, three sisters, Jennie Penn, Ann Yudin, Selma Sperling and two brothers, Sidney and Louis Smith. He loved to read and was an avid researcher of the stock market and current events after a long career at his beloved Bill Smith Auto Parts. His work was his life and passion for nearly 50 years and his primary focus of conversation up until his last day. Alfred was a World War II veteran, serving in the United States Army. He was devoted to his religion and attended Temple regularly and supported many Jewish causes. He also enjoyed being around people and he never met a stranger. He loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His greatest pleasure was spending time with them at meals, movies and during the holidays. The family would like to say a special “thank you” to Alice Hoskins, his caregiver and dear friend for the last three months and a special member of the family for the last 27 years. The Smith family would like to acknowledge what a blessing she has been to the family. A graveside service for Alfred will take place on Monday, June 9, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Springhill Cemetery in Danville with Rabbi Alan Cook officiating. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, June 9, 2014 at Sinai Temple at 3104 West Windsor, Champaign, IL, 61802. Memorials can be made in his name to the Sinai Temple.
