It is with great sorrow that we, the family of Alfred L. Story, 83, of Danville, announce his passing on May 13, 2024 at 8:30 pm.
He was born in 1940, the son of Irvin Story Sr. and Alice (Chestnut) Story. Alfred married his high school sweetheart, Linda Potter, in 1962 in Danville.
Alfred is survived by his wife of 62 years, and son Adam (Lisa) Story of Danville and daughter Amber (Jonathan Rall) Story of College Park, Maryland; three grandchildren, Hannah (Chris) Jones, Colton (fiance Claire Bellman) Story, and Sarah Story; two great-grandchildren, Waylon and Cade Jones; brother Irvin (Judy) Story, Jr.; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Alfred was preceded in death by his parents.
Alfred had a successful career as an aeronautical engineer. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1962 from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana, and a Master of Science degree in Engineering Science in 1964 from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Hartford, Connecticut. Alfred began his career at United Aircraft in Connecticut and later moved to McDonnell-Douglas Astronautics Co, which later became Boeing, in St. Louis, Missouri, with a brief stint at Johnson Space Flight Center in Houston, Texas. His expertise was in guidance and control of navigation systems, and he worked on pivotal space-age projects such as Gemini and Apollo. He built mathematical and simulation models for launch, orbit, and descent for these missions. He then worked on telemetry parameters for Skylab and guidance software for the Space Shuttle. Alfred spent the last decades of his career working on the Cruise Missile project, both Tomahawk and the Joint Defense Air Missile (JDAM). He held a secret clearance.
After a forty-year career, Alfred retired from Boeing in 1998 and returned to Danville, Illinois. He helped his son Adam farm the family ground. He enjoyed his grandchildren and never missed any of their games soccer, basketball, baseball, and volleyball as they grew up. He loved to hunt mushrooms in the spring and drive around to look at the crops.
