Perrysville, Ind. -- Albert L. "Popeye" Lawlyes, 84, of Perrysville, passed away at 5:45 a.m. EDT Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at Union Hospital in Terre Haute, Indiana. He was born May 29, 1927 in Danville, Illinois the son of the late Fred and Margaret Schaffer Lawlyes. He married LaVada Webb on September 17, 1948 in Coal Branch (Rural Perrysville). She preceded him in death on May 20,2008. Survivors include two sons, David(Mary)Lawlyes of Perrysville, Indiana and Daniel(Chris)Lawlyes of Kokomo, Indiana; one granddaughter, Sarah(Joe)McClanahan of Perrysville, Indiana; four grandsons, William and Robert Lawlyes both of Perrysville, Indiana; Trent and Connor Lawlyes both of Kokomo, Indiana; two great grandchildren, Zayne and Maveyn McClanahan. He was preceded in death by his son, Michael and two brothers. Albert was a farmer. He retired from the Warren County REMC after 20 years in September 2011. He was a World War II veteran serving with the United States Navy. While in the Navy he was stationed aboard the USS Nereus. His awards included the Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal. Albert was a life member of the Coal Branch Church. He was a 1944 graduate of Perrysville High School. His memberships include the Perrysville Lions Club; Perrysville American Legion Post #350 and the American Angus Association. He was a past member of the Vermillion County Fair Board. Albert enjoyed making peanut brittle and watching his grandchildren participate in sports. Funeral services: 11 a.m. EDT Friday, October 14, 2011 at DeVerter Funeral Home in Cayuga, Indiana; Officiating: Rev. Tracy Taulman; Burial: Lower Mound Cemetery north of Perrysville, Indiana with military rites by the Perrysville American Legion Post #350; Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. EDT Thursday, October 13, 2011 at the funeral home.
