Agustin "Jonas" Bantog Kapuno, Jr., passed away in Champaign, Illinois on Sunday, August 15, 2021. His lifes journey began on September 15, 1963, when Constancia Bantog and Agustin Kapuno, Sr., welcomed him to the world in Manila, the capital of the Philippines. He was born the second of their five children: Shalee, Jonas, Chito, Ressie, and Beng.
Graduating secondary school from Notre Dame of Manila in Caloocan, he proceeded to study Civil Engineering at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. While there, he threw his energy into many activities and help found an organization called ADHOC which led to many meaningful friendships during that formative stage of life. In 1985, he moved to the United States for further studies leading to a Computer Science degree from the Indiana State Institute of Technology in 1990.
In 1996, he met Omega and they married in 2006. His love for her was deep, and he showed it. Having the flexibility to work from home, he rose early, made her breakfast, packed a lunch, and most importantly, sent her off to work only after explicitly informing her that "I... love... you!"
Jonas worked for GTE in Fort Wayne IN for 8 years as a programmer. Then he started work as a software developer at Cirrus ABS in 1998. Jonas became partner in Cirrus ABS with Matt Nickols, and his best friend Mark Burke in 2001. He worked for over 2 decades as CIO providing direction on technology and programming. He oversaw development and implementation of the actual products and services at Cirrus ABS to his dying day.
Despite working on computers all day, people were what was important to him. He was dependable and loved to share experiences with his friends. People knew they could count on him. Though unafraid to speak his mind, it seemed like every sentence ended with a smile and a laugh, no matter the content.
Games were a major way that he brought people together. Boredom was never a problem when Jonas was around. He loved teaching people to play board games, strategy games, video games, and card games. The smile on their faces provided him with joy of his own
In 2005 he joined the Seventh-day Adventist Church and whole-heartedly committed himself to the faith. He passionately supported the work of God and helped in any way he could. Indeed, on that fateful day, along with others, he was at the church building doing maintenance and beautifying the grounds when his heart literally gave everything for the cause of Christ.
By the grace of God, we have the Blessed Hope that someday, we will see him again.
